rabbits — Kittens

No sooner has the day begun

(No sooner, has the day begun…)

Before we firmly fix the end in sight,

For to be awake inside this world

Is to be on team wrong or right.

For darkness knocks loud and strong

(Many heed its call…)

Goodness. Goodness is but a whisper,

Free will the gift we cannot bear

(Truth the weight that breaks the back…)

For it causes the heart, the soul to blister.

For want and waste binds us all

(Lust for power draws us to its web)

As does the sun and sky,

And fear and pain and recklessness

Becomes the by and by.

Questions go unanswered

(Questions go unasked…)

Explanations remain ungiven,

Practice goes unchecked

Transparency further from life driven.

Thus all we do is rush with force

(rabbits — Kittens blind and deaf)

From the days start until its end,

Back turned in grave obedience

To the life we never once saw as friend.

Child’s Play

Child’s Play

“Stop or I’ll shoot.”

Maria froze.

“Turn around slowly.”

The voice was small, demanding, straight to the point. Turning around Maria gasped, before slamming a trembling hand over her mouth.

Of course she’d seen it before, many times, when her father was cleaning it, but she’d never had it pointed at her before, never come so close to it, until now.

Tommy was just a child, 8 years old, Maria’s kid brother.

“Tommy put that down, we’re not supposed to touch that.”

“You’re not the boss of me….”

Maria reached out to take the gun…a single gunshot took her life.

In the US in 2015, more people were shot and killed by toddlers than by terrorists. In 2013, the New York Times reported on children shot by other children: “Children shot accidentally – usually by other children – are collateral casualties of the accessibility of guns in America, their deaths all the more devastating for being eminently preventable.”  https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/mar/13/the-macabre-truth-of-gun-control-in-the-us-is-that-toddlers-kill-more-people-than-terrorists-do

When indifference is life’s by-line

When all peace does is stifle

And when hope it loses will…
